Break down...

Hi
Just got up after watching Suffragette. You may or may not understand women’s movement, but do watch it. It is a beautiful piece of genuine history of genuine people who cared for others: what does it matter if they were women? All the better!

I want to share a little story I read as a child; it came to me with great force, as I listened to the participants of the last Comm WS at Sita Ram Ashram, Dehradun:
An honest police officer was kidnapped by smugglers. They blind-folded him and took him to their underground hideout. Instead of killing him straightaway, they struck upon a plan. They raised him to bar over-head – and told him that if he lets the bar go, he will fall down hundreds of feet, in to the dark well below, and die. Then, they left.

The police officer tried to keep on holding the bar – till he could not hold on. His fingers, hands, arms became numb. Finally his fingers just slipped and he fell down...

Imagine his surprise, when his fall was broken by hard ground just a few feet below! He removed his blind-fold and discovered that there was no well! Smugglers had only played a deadly trick on him.
Many of us have tried to hold on to an image of being “Normal”, till our hands are paralyzed with pain- and we can no more hold on. Because we have been told by the society that there is a deep dark well below our feet.. that if we stammer our world will collapse. Meltdown. Fiasco. OMG..

Friends, let it go- Check out your fears – once in a life time, whole-heartedly.
Stammer happily, with joy, with abandon.. Be yourself.
As Pradeep Marchuwan says:  Sabse bada rog- Kya kahenge log..

BANGALORE SHG MEETING - 24/01/2016

It’s the latest norm!! We are not just reaching double digits, we are not just happy with 10 people every week, week after week its full house! The small hut that we used for a long time looks abandoned and the bigger hut (that’s what we call that place!) is the place where we meet now by default!

I was excited and at the same time frightened at the thought of 16 people sitting for a 3 hour shg session! Excited because of the strength and frightened at the same time as I was unsure if everyone could get a good share of the time to speak!

Anyways, todays participants were … Super Shobhit , Mundane Mohit , Jovial janani , Mast mansi , robust raman , naaasty naman , Shiny siddarth , Tremendous tapan, Rolling rajesh, Rocking rajkumar , Sociopath sharath , Ravishing Reuben , Smart sharath , All rounder Amarnath , Daredevil dinesh and Different Deepak.

Its tough to name them all in such short space ! ;)

Jaipur SHG Report 17/01/2016

Ghatkopar SHG Meeting #109

Dear Fellow Stammerers,

Five of us met today at the YMCA Ghatkopar, Nikhil Iyer, Vishal Mishra, Rakesh Prasad, Narendra Bhandava, and Dhruv Gupta. We started off by breaking up into pairs and doing an introductory activity. Then, we came back as a group and talked about TISA, what we do and what we can hope to gain by being regular at SHG - overcoming the stammering mindset (more on this in next line). We talked about answering the questions: Do you stammer? And are you ready to Overcome stammering? These questions are outlined on Page 2 in Apna Hath Jagannath, self help manual, and I have included them here:

TISA is in news of Telugu largest circulated daily - Enaadu

Hi All,
Very happy to post an image from Eenadu Sunday magazine on stammering.
Thank to Mr.Chandra Sekhar from Eenadu team to take his effort and publishing a great article on TISA and spread the word on stammering. Thanks to Sachin  ji for his great support.Below is the article's picture.

Regards,
Rajesh - 9676820007

Ramesh - 8897744248

English translation to this news article...Article named as "Stammering....becomes nothing, it transforms to smaller one..."
In this highly competitve world, communicating our thoughts is more important. So if a person has stammering than it is difficult. So to face the world with great confidence TISA was established. It is self help group.
TISA was started by Dr.Sachin Srivastava from Dehradun. He himself was a PWS. To make other PWS live with confidence and live without fear this self help group was established.
He met many people in exploring stammering.
He has learnt new lessons from associations so he wanted happen to all other people.
By sharing feelings and learning new lessons from associations is the main idea of Sachin.
In 2002 he started a blog for writing on stammering and he supported others to write blogs and their feelings.
All the bloggers who are early members first met in 2006. It is then TISA was chalked out for bigger steps. Now it is in many places of India.

Bangalore SHG- First meeting of 2016 - an insight

The team

It's a New Year with new hopes, new dreams and new commitments. On a ravishing Sunday morning, the Cubbon Park was buzzing with activities.  Cubbon park….. It’s an abode for city dwellers living in concrete forest to breathe some fresh air, feel the nature, enjoy some good time with family and importantly to be themselves. Akin to them, an ambitious team of PWS gathered around the lush green Cubbon Park and the first SHG of the year unfolded.

Everyone came to the arena, the hut near the central library, before 10.30. Thanks to New Year..!! It seems everyone has taken resolution to make it to the SHG on time, including me..!!. Let the vibe spread throughout the year.

The team include Dinesh, Baljeet, Pratibha, Kavish, Mohit, Mansi, Naman, Sudhanshu, Anusha, Janani and Harikrishna.

As usual, the meeting started with a round of introduction. Being the first meeting in New Year, the introduction included New Year resolutions also. The list of resolutions varied from being optimistic for the whole 2016, viewing others the way they are and extended even to " no more new year resolutions this time" !!

The team then moved on to sharing round wherein every one elaborated on the various techniques and approaches used on various situations. Prolongation, slow speaking, pausing, bouncing etc were the techniques to name a few in addition to yoga and meditation.
A fellow teammate even explained about a combo of bouncing and prolongation technique which indeed was very interesting and informative too. At the end of the round, the team as a whole and especially the newcomers got enlightened.

Next item on the schedule was prepared speech round. A fellow mate explained on the project that she was working on and truth behind the rather confidential nature of the work. Another fellow mate pursuing her PhD in sports nutrition, came all along from Coimbatore (in TN), with a prepared speech as a prelude for her PhD seminar presentation. The prepared speech sessions at SHGs gives an opportunity to PWS to practice and hone their presentation skills in addition to being informative for others. Another “Super” mate gave an inspirational speech on how he unburdened the luggage of stammering and how he emerged to give a speech during an event. He made us realize “how great we are”.

In order to have a better understanding about acceptance and how to view things through another perspective, the team brainstormed on three questions:
1.      Which is more sweeter- a mango or a tomato..??
2.      Is learning swimming easy or difficult..??
3.      Is stammering good or bad..??

The bottom line of the discussions was that the end result of any activity majorly depends on how we approach the activity. Positive attitude and positive perspective can help us move mountains. Further, getting in touch with like minded people will help one achieve goals steadily and swiftly.
To sum up, the crux of SHG is sharing experience and imbibing wisdom from others who has already walked the same path to achieve a better tomorrow.

(But, on a lighter note, I still feel that Mango is tastier and sweeter than tomato…!!   :P)

And we concluded yet another wonderful day of sharing experiences and gaining wisdom with an energizing activity and a selfe...

The selfie...

On behalf of Bangalore Team SHG, We wish a Very Happy and Prosperous New year.

Stammering is a PORTAL..

"Unable to resolve the doubts, I ran to my spiritual guide. He, too, said, “Your trouble is not physical.” The implications of that statement hit me like a ton of bricks. I had refused to see or accept the truth for nearly 40 years. My world consisted only of the painful past or negative imaginings about the future. When faced with any human interaction, I instantly recalled the boys of my childhood laughing at my stammer. Every interaction with others carved into my heart the fear and terrible pain of rejection.
Stung by the remark of my spiritual guide, I decided to get out of this hell. I learned to sit erect and still and to be in the presence of God, who is the ocean of compassion. I watched every feeling that arose in my heart and every thought that passed through my mind. I owned them as mine and placed them before God..."
Here is this beautiful story from a Jesuit Priest, who stammered his way to God,,

My Confessions

Memory is a tricky thing and before I forget those little details, which could be important for other travelers, I thought I should put everything down. I claim no originality - others may already know this. I also claim no universal efficacy for the approaches I share here: they may or may not work for you.

But as the things stand in the field of stammering therapy today, a little ‘hit & trial’ may not be amiss. I will try to summarize main principles which helped my recovery from stammering mindset. I do not claim that my stammering is cured. I do say that I have become a reasonably good communicator, who still sometimes stammers – but happily!

One last word of caution: this is not the outcome of a controlled trial. This is just a retrospective (and subjective) attempt to understand what MAY have contributed to my recovery. It is, by no means, comprehensive, exhaustive or infallible. It certainly has not made its way to peer-reviewed journals yet!
